About American Military University

In 1991, retired Marine Corps officer James P. Etter founded American Military University (AMU) and broke new ground by offering career-relevant, distance education for a mobile population of military learners with unique needs. Today, AMU holds a leading reputation as a provider of education for military, national security, and public safety professionals. We are proud to be the number one higher education provider for active-duty military members, according to 2017 Department of Defense data, as reported by Military Times, 2018. The university system offers more than 200 online undergraduate and graduate degree and certificate programs to students enrolled worldwide.  Our Student Veterans of America chapter, with more than 4,000 active members, is currently the largest in the nation. Our programs help prepare students for leadership roles both within the military and for transition to post-military careers. AMU students are ambitious professionals from all fields sharing a common motivation for continuing their education and preparing to reach their career potential. AMU is part of American Public University System, which is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (hlcommission.org).
